Beekeepers of the World Gathered in Copenhagen!
The 49th Apimondia Congress, held between 23–27 September 2025 in Copenhagen, Denmark, brought together beekeepers, researchers, and industry representatives from around the world, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and discussion of innovative solutions in apiculture.
Among the highlights of the congress were the gold medal awarded to the Australian team Hivekeepers for their mini centrifuge honey extraction system, and the Global Honey Bar, where honeys from 42 countries were showcased. Throughout the event, topics such as sustainable bee health, innovation, climate change, and the effects of pesticides were discussed.
World Beekeeping Awards and Innovations
Gold Medal: In the innovation category, the gold medal was awarded to Hivekeepers (Australia) for their honey extraction system featuring removable frames and a mini centrifuge.
Silver Medal: The silver medal went to BioInovatsii (Bulgaria) for their manually operated uncapping machine that removes wax coatings from frames without electricity.
Global Honey Bar
More than 7,000 delegates attending the congress had the opportunity to taste a variety of honeys from 42 countries, including unique samples from Bulgaria and Australia.
Key Discussion Topics
Sustainable Bee Health: Companies such as Andermatt and BioVet presented sustainable solutions, including Varroa control and nutritional supplements.
Bee Health and Challenges: Sessions addressed bee breeding for disease resistance, the impact of pesticides, the effects of climate change, and challenges related to antimicrobial resistance.
Scientific Advances: Researchers shared findings on honey authenticity detection methods and the potential roles of honey and other bee products in diabetes and cancer research.
Contributions from Near East Univerity (NEU)
The congress, held under the themes of innovation, sustainability, and global collaboration, shed light on the future of beekeeping.
With the participation of around 8,000 attendees, the event featured 209 oral presentations, 604 poster sessions, and invited talks.
Prof. Dr. Özge Özden, Founding Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Near East University, chaired two separate sessions.
Additionally, Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and Lecturer Mehmet Karagözlü, together with their Italian research partners Dr. Gennaro di Prisco, presented their poster titled “Floral Authentication of Cypriot Honey Based on Volatile Composition.”
Continuing Collaboration
Prof. Dr. Özge Özden emphasized that scientific cooperation in apiculture with the Institute for Plant Protection in Naples, Italy, will continue in the coming period.
