Sustainable Livestock Farming Adapted to the Climate of the TRNC: Alternative Feed Raw Materials

A seminar titled “Sustainable Livestock Farming Adapted to the Climate of the TRNC: Alternative Feed Raw Materials,” presented by Associate Professor Dr. Valiollah Palangi, a faculty member of the Department of Animal Science, was held at Near East University on May 6, 2026, with the active participation of academics and students. The seminar addressed sustainable livestock farming practices and the possibilities of using alternative feed raw materials in accordance with the climatic conditions of the TRNC. Attendees included the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Özge Özden; the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Dr. İsfendiyar Darbaz; the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Salih Gücel; faculty members and students from the Faculty of Agriculture; and Sümeyye Palangi, a lecturer from the English Preparatory School. The seminar evaluated the impact of the TRNC’s climatic conditions, such as drought and irregular rainfall, on the livestock sector; the importance of alternative feed raw materials for sustainable production was particularly emphasized. Scientific approaches aimed at more efficient use of local resources, reduction of feed costs, and development of environmentally friendly production models were shared with the participants. During the discussions, significant evaluations were made regarding local and alternative forage crops that can adapt to the conditions of the TRNC in terms of the sustainability of livestock farming on the island. In particular, project ideas were put forward focusing on the evaluation of drought-resistant, low-water-consumption plants that can naturally grow in the island’s ecology for animal feeding. Participants emphasized the need to increase scientific research on the use of moringa, citrus by-products, thorny forage crops, and local pasture species as feed raw materials. It was also stated that these plants could both reduce feed costs and contribute to environmental sustainability.
The seminar included discussions on new research projects that can be carried out through university-industry collaboration, student-focused scientific studies, and applied field research. It was assessed that projects developed within this scope would make significant contributions to the future of livestock farming in the TRNC. The event contributed significantly to the sharing of academic knowledge as well as increasing students’ awareness of sustainable agriculture and livestock farming. Additionally, 15 students participated in the event.
