
Prof. Dr. Bahar Deniz Çalış from Istanbul Bilgi University shared with her audience an example of urban area work open to public use while preserving the historical texture in the Istanbul Historical City Square in an online meeting held on December 13, 2024 at 14:00 via the Google Meet application.
Prof. Dr. Bahar Deniz Çalış received her BA in Architecture from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1995; her MA in Architecture from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York in 1998 and her PhD from METU in 2004. She is the author of the book Şehrengiz, Urban Rituals and Deviant Sufi Mysticism in Ottoman Istanbul (Farnham: Ashgate, 2014 – second edition by Routledge in 2018). Her research interests include cultural interactions in the early modern Mediterranean landscape; Ottoman spatial culture, Ottoman garden and landscape traditions, urban history and culture; Islamic art and architectural history. Her most recent project is the Beyazıt Square Urban Design Project, which she designed together with Ali Kural and whose implementation was completed in 2022. Bahar Deniz Çalış is currently working as a faculty member at Istanbul Bilgi University, Faculty of Architecture.
