A seminar on sustainable urban transformation and the adaptive reuse of industrial sites was organized online on May 18, 2026, by the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Near East University Faculty of Agriculture. Landscape Architect and Urban Design Specialist Zeynep Güneş, who participated as a speaker in the seminar held via Google Meet , shared current approaches to reintegrating abandoned industrial sites into urban life from environmental, social, and economic perspectives in her presentation titled “Brownfield Revitalization.” Güneş, who completed her master’s degree in Sustainable Urban Design at Lund University, noted that her thesis focused on the transformation of brownfield sites based on sustainable design principles, using Stockholm’s Loudden district as a case study. In her presentation, she highlighted the importance of environmental remediation, nature-based solutions, mixed-use land planning, green infrastructure applications, and public space design in brownfield transformation. Sharing examples from her international academic and professional background, Güneş stated that the experience she gained from urban design and landscape architecture projects in Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, and Türkiye has contributed significantly to the planning of sustainable cities. Throughout the seminar, students and academics had the opportunity to learn that brownfield sites should not be viewed merely as abandoned industrial zones; rather, through proper planning and sustainable design approaches, they can be transformed into significant opportunities that contribute to environmental restoration, economic development, and the quality of social life. The event concluded following an interactive Q&A session where questions from the participants were answered.
